The Basics of Poker

The game of poker can be played by any number of players from 2 to 14. There are many different forms of the game, but all involve betting and winning a hand of cards. Typically, the highest ranking hand wins the “pot” – all of the bets placed by other players during that particular deal. You can also win the pot by bluffing, trying to convince other players that you have a high hand when you don’t.

The first round of betting in a poker hand starts with 2 mandatory bets called blinds made by the players to the left of the dealer. After the players receive their 2 hole cards a new betting phase begins. 3 cards are then dealt face up to the table that everyone can use – these are called community cards and are known as the flop. A second betting round takes place with each player deciding whether to call, raise or fold their hand.

When you say “raise” you are adding more money to the bet pool and increasing your chances of having a strong hand. To call means to match the previous bet amount. If you think someone else has a strong hand, then you can “raise” your own bet to try and take their money. When you fold, you give up your hand and stop betting. It is a good idea to play only with money you are willing to lose and to keep track of your wins and losses as you play.
